Description
The purpose of the Church Council is to act as the governing body of the Milford United Methodist Church. Council is responsible for overseeing the policy and procedures of the church. All committee chairs attend the monthly meeting to report on activities, fundraisers, and concerns they have regarding the life of their committee.

Church Council Chair
Purpose of Ministry:   The purpose of serving as Church Council Chair at the Milford United Methodist Church is to coordinate, facilitate, and preside overall meetings of the governing body of the local church.

Objectives:
To preside over regular and special Church Council meetings.
To provide the cohesive atmosphere where all facets of the church can come together to work for the church as a whole and to glorify God.

Activities:   
To serve as the focal point for any issues or problems throughout the church by being open and available, actively intervening, assessing and enabling
To ensure that all necessary church business is discussed and appropriately voted upon during Church Council meetings.
To prepare, publish, distribute and adhere to meeting agendas
Related Gifts   Nurturing leadership, encouragement, wisdom, discernment, helping, shepherding

Other Qualities:   
Listening, administration, patience, teambuilding, dependability, openness

Reports to:   
Works closely with the Pastor and all committee chairs

Service Times:   
Regular Church Council meetings are held monthly with special meetings scheduled as needed

Length of Service:   Yearly, as nominated by the Committee on Lay Leadership. Ideal length of service not to exceed three consecutive years.

Training/Orientation:   Most helpful if this individual has served at least one year in some capacity on Church Council.

Church Council Secretary
Purpose of Ministry:   The purpose of serving as Secretary of Church Council at the Milford United Methodist Church is to accurately capture and record the minutes of all regular Church Council meetings, special Church Council meetings and annual Church Conference.

Objectives:   
To provide a factual and meaningful history of the activities and decisions made by Church Council.

Activities:   
To attend all regular, monthly church Council meetings, special church council meetings, and annual Church Conference and to accurately record the minutes of those meetings are required by the "Book of Discipline". Minutes must then be published and distributed to members for review prior to the next regular meeting of the Church Council. Individual should also be prepared to archive copies of these meetings.

Other Qualities:   Good organization skills, secretarial skills and dependability. Computer skills are a plus

Service Times:   
Regular Church Council meetings are held monthly with special meetings scheduled as needed. Annual Church Conference or special Church Conferences a scheduled by the District Superintendent

Length of Service:   Yearly, as nominated by the Committee on Lay Leadership

Training/Orientation:   While not necessary, it is most helpful if this individual has served at least one year in some capacity on Church Council.
